Community Stipends for Substance Abuse Prevention

Through "Small Community" stipends to partner organizations, Talbot Partnership has fostered a number of projects to strengthen our community. Projects are funded in the area to provide alternative activities for youth, adult education, family support, youth life-building skills, and decreasing access to alcohol and other drugs. A plan of continuation beyond the grant time is required at the onset. For more information contact info@talbotpartnership.org.

"First Night Talbot" Volunteer Coordination

First Night Talbot is a community celebration of New Year's Eve. It is a festival that marks the passage of time through the arts. One of its goals is to provide a shared cultural experience that is affordable to all and is alcohol and drug free.

Proceeds from First Night are directed into funding for future First Night celebrations and into substance abuse prevention and other programs for children, youth, and adults throughout Talbot County.

Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices is a 4-week program for families of 4th through 8th graders on how to keep adolescents drug-free. It has been used for fourteen years by more than 200,000 suburban and rural families in 30 states and Canada. Rated as a Model Program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the program is updated regularly to reflect the latest research in prevention strategies. In addition to an overview of adolescent substance abuse and risks of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, participants learn family communication skills, skills for adolescents to resist peer pressure, and basic parenting skills around this issue. Among the comments from Talbot County parents that have taken the course over the past nine years, "The class infused a healthy dose of reality into my understanding of the drug and alcohol issues facing preteens and teens. It also gave me some practical tools for my kids to use when faced with difficult social situations." Programs can be arranged through schools, home settings or clubs.

"Safe Homes" For Families of 6th - 12th Graders

The Safe Homes program works with Talbot County schools, private schools and the health department to encourage families of 6th - 12th graders to commit to maintain an alcohol/drug-free home. Quarterly newsletters share tips on talking to teens about alcohol and drugs and keeping an open dialogue going in the home.

Smoking Cessation Programs

Working with the Talbot County Health Department, Talbot Partnership is a resource for programs and information to help youth and adults stop smoking.

In conjunction with the Smoking Prevention Action Team and local law enforcement agencies, Partnership coordinates quarterly compliance checks on tobacco sales to minors.

Through a grant to help women in the workplace quit smoking, Partnership is working to bring smoking cessation classes to the citizens of Talbot County.

Partnership also advocates for smoke free dining and worked with local and state legislators to pass smoke free restaurant dining in Talbot County. A new brochure "Where to Dine Smoke Free" is available free of charge from Talbot Partnership.

Turn Around

Turn Around is a free, confidential drug screen for adolescents residing in Talbot County.

Funded by the Talbot County Health Department Addictions Program and the Talbot Partnership, this service aims to help parents determine if their teen is involved in drug abuse.

Parents can call 410-819-5900 during weekdays to schedule a free, confidential drug screen and assessment of their teen.

Appointments will be scheduled within 24 hours. Once the drug test is completed, a Talbot County adolescent addictions counselor will meet with the parents to make recommendations. A test sample is taken at the Addictions program offices at 301 Bay St., Easton, MD and is sent out to a certified laboratory. Results are usually returned within 72 hours.
