Taking a Stand
Taking a Stand (for Alcohol-free Youth) is a community coalition that includes leaders from the prevention, law enforcement, and education communities. This group serves as the area's leading force in the effort to prevent consumption of alcohol by those under 21.
Changing public attitudes toward underage drinking
Taking A Stand works to educate parents about the risks of underage drinking, legal liabilities, and strategies to keep teens alcohol-free. Using media and direct mail strategies, the group informs parents about the rise of binge drinking among teens, the ease of access to alcohol in the home environment, and how to deal with teen drinking. A "Tips for Parents of Teens" is supplied via e-mail as well as U.S. mail.
Increasing enforcement efforts and uniformity of sanctions
Taking A Stand works with the Law Enforcement Action Team (LEAT) of Talbot County to coordinate the efforts of law enforcement in seeking out and apprehending underage drinkers and adults who sell or provide alcohol to youth. LEAT also monitors hearings of the Talbot County Liquor Board conducted by police. By providing annual server training, Taking A Stand assists business owners in maintaining compliance with the law.
Promoting pro-active community programs to reduce underage drinking
A key initiative of Taking A Stand is the annual Safe Homes program, through which hundreds of parents of children in grades 6-12 sign a pledge to prohibit alcohol and drug use by teens in or around their homes. The coalition also has launched direct mail campaigns to parents of all Talbot County public secondary school students and supplied timely prevention education information to the Board of Education for inclusion its monthly school newsletters. To help parents minimize children's risk factors for underage drinking, parent education programs are offered throughout the year.
