Talbot County Cancer Control Coalition - TCCCC

Mission

One of the missions of TCCCC is to protect residents from secondhand tobacco smoke, prevent the initiation of tobacco use by young people and reduce tobacco consumption through awareness, education, and advocacy.

Accomplishments

• Organized residents to pass a local referendum banning smoking in public places
• Educated merchants about the state law that makes it illegal to sell tobacco to minors
• Convinced local law enforcement to conduct compliance checks of merchants to reduce illegal youth tobacco sales
• Established "stop smoking" classes for young people cited for illegal tobacco use or possession
• Coordinated professional educational conferences
• Presented with the American Heart Association Award from for Outstanding Legislative Achievement 1995-96
• Posted voluntary No Smoking signs at all sports complexes in Talbot County
• Assisted with passage of a county ordinance to place tobacco products out of reach of youth in stores in 2001

What We Do

• Pass stricter youth access to tobacco laws at the state level
• Enforce existing tobacco laws and support new initiatives to reduce tobacco use on the national, state, and/or local level
• Encourage parents and other adults to model and advocate for smoke-free lifestyles
• Encourage smoking cessation by adults and youth

What You Can Do

• Write letters to the editor
• Write letters/telephone legislators
• Attend tobacco issue rallies
• Conduct merchant surveys
• Participate in community events such as ACS Great American Smoke Out, World No Tobacco Days
• Volunteer with student groups such as the "No Ifs, Ands, or Butts" Club at Easton Middle School
• Join the Coalition
